One of the most famous episodes related to the legendary ship Sōya is the miraculous survival of the Sakhalin Huskies Taro and Jiro, who were left behind in Antarctica for a year before their astonishing rescue.
This special exhibition will showcase rare artifacts from our collection that highlight the role of dogs in Antarctic expeditions, along with equipment used during Sōya’s Antarctic research missions—items that are usually not open to the public. Through these exhibits, we will explore the critical role that dogs played during the era of Antarctic exploration and Sōya’s missions, as well as how these efforts laid the foundation for the Antarctic research programs that continue to this day.
